Relocation Update

Following receipt of planning approval for the development of the new club facilities at Green lane in September 2016 we have been frustrated by the inordinate delays caused by the Planning Department of RBWM.

Thankfully, we now seem to have resolved all outstanding issues and conditions attached to the approval and anticipate a start on site of October/November 2017 and completion in September 2018 – ready for the 2018/19 Indoor Season. We will keep you informed as to any further developments as they occur, including a presentation in November of the proposed interior design scheme.

The new Club will be fantastic and well worth waiting for!!

Newsletter – May 2017

As usual we have started the year with somewhat less than perfect weather conditions, however, hopefully Summer is not far away!

Simply add your name to the match sheets found on the notice boards in the club – YOUR SUPPORT WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

New members are encouraged to join in with the friendly matches, as this is an excellent way to enjoy the friendly atmosphere, meet new people and improve your bowling (hopefully).

Relocation Update

Planning approval for the development of the new club facilities at Green lane was granted in September 2016.

There were 21 conditions attached to the approval, (not unusual for a project of this size) and we have now agreed and completed detailed designs to satisfy 20 with only one outstanding – the improvement works to the road bridge in Green Lane giving access to the proposed new club site.

The extent of the improvement works to the bridge have now been agreed however, we are still awaiting action by RBWM to progress and finalise the legal arrangements relating to the land adjacent to the bridge.

The planning department of RBWM have been extremely difficult to deal with throughout the planning process, as there appears to be a serious lack of personnel in the planning department and the reason for the inordinate delays, experienced to date, can only be placed with them.

Patience is said to be a virtue however and so we hope that, at long last, we shall be in a position in the next 2 months to advise as to a firm commencement date for the works. We have, and are still, using the time to advantage however, with the appointed professional design team having now progressed many of the detailed design works for the new build.

We will keep you informed as to any further developments as they occur but at this time I believe it safe to say that the completion date for the new Club will now be July 2018. This will mean that we can plan and look forward to a final outdoor season at York Road next year, before we relocate in September 2018 ready for the next indoor season. The new Club will be fantastic and worth waiting for!

Newsletter – March 2017

We are fast approaching the end of the present Indoor season and, together with finalising the current year’s League matches and    competitions, we are also very involved in planning for next year – 2017/18.

The “Finals” week is scheduled for w/c 24th April with the Presentation Night to be held on Friday 28th April. All are welcome to join us on this night which promises to be a fitting end to the Indoor Season.

The League team registration forms for next year are now on the notice boards and we would be grateful if the team captains would complete their team entry a.s.a.p.

The National Indoor Competition entry forms, for 2017/18, are now available from the front office and the closing date for entries is the 25th April.

Thank you to ALL members who returned the Member’s Questionnaire last month. The information gleaned from the forms has been extremely helpful in informing the planning process for next year.

One of the initial requests, having a large degree of support, is for the creation of a new Triple Mixed League for next year. The response was sufficiently robust to form, potentially, 10 to 12 new triples teams for a new league.

We have posted a Team/Individual registration form on both the Men’s and Ladies’ notice boards and if you are interested, then please add your name/team name to the list.

From our current fixture plans it is proposed that the new Triples League will be held primarily on Tuesdays with overspill on Thursday Mornings 10:30 am to 12.30 pm. We hope you will support this new league which will then prove to be as popular as the current Friday Lunchtime League.

Congratulations to our Ladies: Helen Jones, Eileen D-Batt, Loraine Woodley and Mary Price who have reached the Quarter Final of the National 4’s. The next match is to be held at Melton Mowbray on Saturday 25th March.

Congratulations to all who organised and took part in the John Clarke Triples Competition on the 4th March. The winners were Brian Faulkner, Sam Stack and David Perriman with Ralph Hatch and Mike Hutley close runners-up.

The Friendly matches continue and please add your name to the selector’s sheets on the notice boards if you are available to play.

A new fixture this year was an away trip to Chelmsford to play Falcon. An excellent day out and a future home fixture secured!

Details of Easter closing this year has been posted in the Club:–

Open on Good Friday, 14th April for roll-ups only (Bar closed).

Open on Saturday 15th April 10:00 am to 3:00pm

Closed Sunday and Monday 16th & 17th April.

Back to normal opening hours Tuesday 18th April.

Relocation Update

We are pleased to report that the plans for the development of the new Club at the Green lane site are still on programme, namely:-

Site commencement May 2017 and

Completion in April / May 2018.

Roger Wyatt (General Secretary)

Newsletter – November 2016

Two of the planned 50th Anniversary events took place in October and both were extremely well supported and successful, both on and off the rinks.

The Jubilee Match, against a team comprising our “Friends” took place on Sunday, 9th October 2016 and this was followed by an Invitation Match against the EIBA on Sunday 16th October 2016.

The 16th October was the anniversary, to the day, of the official opening of the Indoor Bowling Rinks and we were pleased to welcome many guests, who have, over the years, been actively involved with and ardent supporters of the Club.

The day was further enhanced by a visit from our Prime Minister, Theresa May, who honoured us with her presence over the tea break!

On Wednesday, 30th November 2016 the Club will host a Jubilee Club Day which will be open to all members. Refreshments will be provided and we look forward to welcoming as many members as possible to join with us in celebrating the Jubilee year.

The “Captain’s” Evening, held on Tuesday 11th October 2016, was well attended and the proposals, made by members, at that meeting, were then discussed at the Indoor Management Meeting held on the 27th October.

The changes recommended and agreed at the Indoor Committee, have now been documented and copies of the proposals are displayed on the Club notice boards.

Last Saturday, 5th November was a very successful day for our teams in National Competitions – The ladies won their Yetton Trophy heat v’s Rivermead by 80-56. Next round against Egham on November 19th.

Also on Saturday, the men fared similarly in the Denny Cup heat v’s Handy Cross, winning 77-55 and now go forward to play West Berks, also on the 19th November.

Well done and good luck to all in the next round.

The friendly matches played over the last 4 weeks resulted in Desborough winning home games against: Preston IBC, Bucks VPs, Glebelands and Southampton Old Green, with only one loss away at Herga IBC in Harrow.

The Indoor Committee membership has been reviewed and recommendations for change have been discussed, agreed and implemented, namely:- In the short term, the composition of the Indoor Committee has changed to make it more inclusive and representative of the indoor members’ views.

The Indoor Committee, going forward, will therefore comprise the following members:-

Chair-John Bucknell,

Secretary-Roger Wyatt

Members– Michael White, Gill O’Neill, Iain Burns, Doreen Lovering, Len Essex, Bruce Adams, Linda Eumorfopoulos, Kim Eales and Terry Davies.

Relocation Update

We are on target for, site works to commence March 2017 and a completion date of February /March 2018.

Further consultations are planned, with members, to help in finalising the detailed designs for bowling facilities and also any other activities that may be made available to members in the new Club.

October Newsletter

WELCOME BACK

We would like to welcome all Indoor members, particularly our new members, for the 2016/17 Indoor Season.

We look forward to a competitive year, both for the year’s friendly matches and for our own league teams.

2016/2017

This year Desborough are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Indoor facilities. Several special events have been organised including:-

  1. A Jubilee match against a team comprising the “Friends” – a team composed of members from other clubs who have regularly played against Desborough over the years. This match will take place on Sunday 9th October 2016.

  1. An invitation match against the EIBA on Sunday 16th October 2016 – The day is the anniversary of the official opening of the Indoor Bowling Rinks and we have invited many guests who have, over the years, been actively involved with and ardent supporters of the Club.

  1. On Wednesday, 30th November 2016 the Club will host a Jubilee Club Day which will be open to all members. Refreshments will be provided and we look forward to welcoming as many members as possible to join with us in celebrating the Jubilee year.

In addition to the above we have scheduled a “Captain’s” Evening for Tuesday 11th October 2016, at which all league teams, Men and Ladies, are invited to send their Captain and/or other representative(s) to join in an open discussion as to how the current league arrangements operate and also to discuss possible improvements and/or changes, both for the current year and also, for the new Club premises going forward.

The Friendly matches have already started with a completed fixture against Oxford & District IBC played on the 1st October 2016. The end result was a win to Oxford however, I am sure all who played had some welcome practice on the indoor rinks!

Please check the notice boards for future friendly fixtures and add your name to the match sheets if you are available. The friendly fixtures are a key part of the Club’s activities and new bowlers are encouraged to place their name for selection – they will be well looked after!

RELOCATION UPDATE

We are pleased to report that we have now received formal detailed Planning Approval for our new proposed Bowling Club to be constructed in Green Lane Maidenhead.

The provisional programme, agreed with the developer, is now:-

Finalise design and tender documentation by January 2017

Site commencement February 2017 and

COMPLETION IN APRIL / MAY 2018.

(INCLUDING A NEW CAR PARK!!)

I look forward to playing with you and against you for this coming season.

Regards

Roger Wyatt (General Secretary)

Newsletter – April 2016

The season 2015/2016 is nearly at end, with finals week between the 18th and 22nd April. The Indoor committee and the Management Committee hope you all summer well; that the weather is kind and that if you are playing bowls you have much success.

National Competitions

Congratulations to Eileen Devonald – Batt and Mary Price who won the National Over 60 pairs Trophy and also to Clive Behmber, Brett Long, Gordon Knapper and Dave Simpson who reached the semi-finals of the National Over 60 fours Competition and were narrowly defeated on an extra end.

Club Finals

An interesting programme with 5 games on most nights has been arranged. Competitions commence at 6.30pm every night.

There promises to be some good bowling and it would be nice to have the club full of spectators. The singles finals are scheduled for Friday 22nd April, and as usual the kitchen will be open for food.

Women’s singles:

Eileen Devonald – Batt v Lorraine Woodley

Men’s singles:

Len Essex v Kyle Mallandain

Kyle, only a few years ago, played in some outstanding under 25 singles when the club were able to stage this competition.

Please come along and support the members/teams playing in the finals.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM was held on the 11th April and approximately 80 people attended.

An overwhelming vote in favour decided that from the start of next season, the jack will be rolled in all leagues.

The proposition to merge both Women’s leagues into one resulted in a dead heat vote, so the status quo remains. However the future of the Women’s leagues, including perhaps using a handicap system will be high on the Agenda on the Indoor committee and will include consultation with members.

2016/2017

Next season Desborough will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Indoor facilities. Several special events are being organised. There will be much to look forward to, including looking at the possible reorganisation of all leagues as we move to relocation.

Relocation Update

Following the unanimous decision by the RBWM Development Panel at their planning meeting on the 16th March to approve our application to move to a new site in Green Lane, we are now working to agree the details required to satisfy the conditions outlined in the approval document.

It is considered that we shall be able to comply with all their requirements satisfactorily and are looking forward to this stage of the development being completed in the near future.

Newsletter – March 2016

With the current cold weather, it is hard to believe that Spring starts on the traditional date of 21st March (or as the weather forecasters prefer, the 1st March),  however as we are still in the Indoor season then we can continue to enjoy the benefits of playing in a warm environment.

Jubilee Celebrations

2016/2017 will be an exciting season for Desborough as the club came into existence in October 1966.

Several events are being planned; including a match with the EIBA LTD and a match with teams from invited clubs who have been friends with Desborough over the years.

John Clark Open Triples.

!4 triples played in this all day competition, which was won by the margin of 1 shot by Nigel Penn, Michael Nutley and Ralph Hatch. All teams played 4 games and points were awarded by the 3.2.1 method, therefore avoiding having to hold a final.

National Competitions.

Desborough members will be represented at the finals of the National Championships at Nottingham IBC.

Mary Price and Eileen Devonald Batt will be playing Cumbria at 9.30 am on the 30th March in the over 60’s pairs.

Brett Long, Gordon Knapper David Simpson and Clive Behmber will be playing Doncaster at 9.30am on the 26th March.

We wish them all good luck.

Club Competitions

These are up to date; please keep an eye on the board for the closing dates of each round. The General Secretary has been carrying out an exercise to relate prize money awarded to the number of entrants to each competition. His results will be published on the notice boards in due course. It should be noticed that the more entrants into competitions will result in higher prize money.

Finals week is 18th to 22nd April, with Presentation Evening the 22nd April.

The 3 Club Competition (Thicket withdrew)

This competition has been organised for Saturday 12th March. Teams from Town, Desborough Outdoor Members and Indoor Members only will be involved. The selected teams are currently displayed on the board.

Annual General Meeting.

Please put the date of 11th April in your diaries, the meeting will be held in the Club Lounge and commence at 7.pm

Advertising Board.

The television set in the lounge by the green is up and functioning with all details of happenings at Desborough.

Please watch out for items of interest and let me know if you wish to place any item on the TV.

Forthcoming Matches for the rest of the season.

16th March         Berkshire Masonic      Home

30th March         West Berks               Away

3rd April              Luton                        Away

10th April          Oxford & District        Home

18th to 22nd April – Club Finals Week

Relocation Update

The planning application is scheduled to be considered by the RBWM Development Panel on the 16th March 2016 – a decision is awaited.

Newsletter – January 2016

The second half of the season is well underway, indoors seems a good place to be with all the rain and wind which we are experiencing.

Rolling the Jack.

The introduction of rolling the jack for the Men’s leagues and Afternoon leagues has created much controversy. Rolling the jack has been a part of the women’s league for many years. In the autumn a questionnaire was given to all team captains asking for comments on rolling the jack and it was from these answers that the indoor committee took the decision to introduce the system.

This session will be used as an experiment and the matter will be discussed at the Annual General Meeting in April. If you have opinions on rolling the Jack please make sure you attend.

National Competitions

Sadly, Desborough exited all the National Team Events, at an earlier stage than of past years. The women played the Yetton on the 16th January and lost to Riverain by 22 shots.  Desborough C played Hatfield in the Mason Trophy on the 22nd January and lost by 3 shots.

In the Individual National Competitions. We still have representatives in the Women’s Fours, Women’s Pairs and the over 60s Pairs. Mary Price, Eileen Devonald batt, Lorraine Woodley and Helen Jones are the players involved.

Mixed Triples Day

To be held on the 27th February, starting at 10am, the notice is on the board and spaces are being filled, 14 teams are all that can be accommodated. Please enter your team and enjoy a day’s competitive bowling. Entrance fee £11 per player (including lunch). There will be cash prizes for the winners and runners-up.

Club Competitions

Please keep an eye on the boards to ensure you play on or before the due date. Extensions to the dates are only being given for extenuating circumstances.

Social Events

A splendid Burns night supper with Quiz was held on the Poet’s Birthday, it was a good evening arranged by Iain Burns and enjoyed by all.

Brian’s Bingo Nights are proving extremely popular and the next one is to be 27th February after the Mixed Triples has finished. Watch the boards for the notice. (SOLD OUT)

Communications

You will have noticed that the display unit over the canteen is no longer in operation. The information has been transferred to the Television screen over the green which is much clearer and can display more details. Please watch the screen because all relevant activities will be displayed for member’s information.
