Newsletter – October 2014

Welcome back to the new Indoor Season, after a summer in which the weather has been good and has enabled those of us who play outdoors to get plenty of vitamin D!

At a meeting, held during the summer, two further offices were filled:-
Indoor Secretary – Chris Howard

Match Secretary – Doreen Lovering

Thank you to both for volunteering to carry out these important roles.

The general rules for the Indoor competitions have been revised and copies of the new rules will be available from the office.

Please consider entering at least one competition with your friends. If you are a relatively new bowler this is one way you can play against other players you may not have had an opportunity to play against before.
The competitions are great fun, are a great way to improve your bowls and help to create a good atmosphere within the Club. Competition forms are available from outside the office.

Social Events.

We are still looking for a volunteer to organise social events during the season, if you can help then please contact either, Chris Howard, the Indoor Secretary or Jessie Clark, Chairman.

League Changes

The men’s evening leagues will start at 7pm, Monday to Thursday, With Friday being used for Mixed Evening League, the Men’s Mini-league and occasionally other leagues for which additional slots are required.

The leagues will play 18 ends by using an extra 15/20 minutes over the 2 hours allocated, if required. If it is found that games take longer than this then a further review of times will be carried out.

Please remember that all the previous league rules are still in operation.

  • Placing jack
  • 1 shot away for a burnt end.
  • No visiting head.

The afternoon Ladies leagues from Monday to Thursday will commence not earlier than 4.30pm and not later than 4 45pm, this will allow extra time for car parking.

It should be noted however that where there are leagues scheduled for Fridays then the parking may still be an issue as the following Friday evening matches will still commence at 6.30pm.

We are pleased to welcome Louise Houghton Wealth Management (LHWM) as one of the Club sponsors for the next two years and thank her for the new mats!

Excellent results for Desborough

The men won the Denny Cup (the Bowls equivalent to the FA Trophy) on the 19th April, defeating Wellingborough 85-62 in the morning and  Stanley 80 –38 in the afternoon.

Following the winning of the National Top Club earlier in the month and only losing the Egham (Mixed equivalent of the Denny) in the quarter finals after winning 31 consecutive games over three years in this competition, Desborough is one of the top clubs in the country.

Well done to all who played in these competitions.

Desborough men also won the Lenny Denny Trophy on the 26th April, a competition which is run by Cambridge Park Club in Middlesex. This is the fourth year in a row that the club have won this Trophy.

Annual General Meeting

It was good to see so many members present. It shows interest in the club and hopefully the new league systems for 2014/2015 being organised next year will prove better for all players.

Presentation Evening

Again it was good to see so many members attending to watch the finals of the singles – there was a good atmosphere and the games were excellent to watch.

If you watched the indoor competitions during finals week, why not enter at least one competition next season, either on your own or make up a team for the Fours or the Triples or the Pairs.

If every member entered just one competition then the club would be a much livelier place and new bowlers would enjoy another level of bowling from rollups and leagues. Forms will be available at the start of the season.

We also need more members to join the social committee for both outdoor and indoor seasons.
