Press Report – 10 July, 2018

Desborough’s woes in the Kennet League continue. The A team faced Reading A and the quality of the opposition and the distraction of the football meant they slumped to a 14 – 0 defeat. The B team didn’t fare much better at the Royal Household as they went down 12 -2 with Ken Hazell, Roger Lewis, Danny McDonald and Tony Buckley being the only winning rink.

The KLV threw up a match between Desborough’s A and B teams and the 55-42 scoreline in favour of the A team for a 10-0 result didn’t give a true reflection of the closeness of the game.

In the Ladies Royal Shield, Desborough hosted Windsor Great Park and although they won on 2 of the 3 rinks, they lost 56-48 with the best performance coming from Sylvia Laban, Rhona Pike and Gill O”Neill who won 22-14.

The TVL produced a better result for the Bluebells against Woodley as they won on 2 of the 3 rinks winning 47-45 overall for an 8-2 result.

Desborough’s Senior Four of John Stenson, Bruce Adams, Peter Braddock and John Young beat Thatcham to reach the County Final where they faced a four skipped by Keith Jones of Tilehurst and were triumphant 23-16. They now represent Berkshire in the National Finals at Leamington.

Barry Gill produced an outstanding performance to beat Peter Hawkins at Bracknell in the County 2 Wood Champion of Champions to set up a semi final at Caversham on August 3.

Desborough’s week ended with a trip to Oaken Grove to face Maidenhead Town. With the visitors winning on 3 of the 5 rinks and the hosts scraping home by 3 shots, it meant that the winner on a really hot day was the game of bowls. With Tony Devonald-Batt’s rink and that of Ray Weaver winning by 10 shots, the latter along with Michael Hobson, Nicola Jones and Rose Turner claimed the bragging rights on countback.
